Remember that advance planning also applies when traveling with a large group and during high season.

  1. Antarctica: Trips to Antarctica are limited to specific cruise seasons, and the number of tourists allowed is controlled to protect the delicate ecosystem. These trips usually need to be booked well in advance due to limited availability.
  2. Machu Picchu, Peru: The Inca Trail and permits to visit Machu Picchu are limited to a certain number of visitors each day. Permits can sell out quickly, so planning ahead is essential if you want to hike the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu.
  3. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador: The Galápagos Islands have strict regulations to protect the unique wildlife and environment. Visitor numbers are limited, so booking cruises and accommodations well in advance is recommended.
  4. African Safari: Popular safari destinations in Africa, such as Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara, often have limited accommodations and high demand, especially during peak wildlife viewing seasons. Booking a year in advance ensures you get your preferred lodges and camps.
  5. Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park is home to about half the world’s mountain gorilla population, making Rwanda a top choice for a gorilla trekking safari. Passes are limited so plan early if you want to experience this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
  6. Belmond Trains: If you've always dreamt of a trip on the Orient Express you better plan far in advance. Ditto for the Hogwarts Express, aka the Royal Scotsman in Scotland, and any of the other routes.
  7. National Parks in the U.S. and Canada: Popular national parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Banff can have limited accommodations, especially during peak seasons. Booking campsites, lodges, and tours early is recommended.
  8. Camino de Santiago, Spain: The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, especially the Camino Francés, can get quite crowded during certain times of the year. Planning ahead for accommodations and flights can help you have a smoother experience.
  9. Cherry Blossom Season in Japan: If you're planning to visit Japan during cherry blossom season (spring), which is a peak travel time, it's wise to book accommodations and transportation well in advance.
  10. The Super Bowl, The Kentucky Derby, the World Cup, the Olympics, F1 racing, Wimbledon and any other major sporting event that you may want to see up close and personal.
